dried turmeric root is hard; the best tool I know for breaking it up into manageable chunks is my leatherman "crunch", a gift from mac that has the added quality of being illegal to carry around in the UK (it's got a locking blade; go figure...)
the excellent spice grinder came from manufactum and, also illustrated, is one of the smallest of our Small Brown Bowls, which collectively are pretty near the top of our list of kitchen essentials.
